Internet of Things goes into elevator to make elevator safety more reliable

September 09, 2022
From the 2011 Science and Technology Work Conference convened by the Nanjing Bureau of Quality Supervision, it was learned that the quality supervision department has selected 20 elevators throughout the city as pilot sites. The background of the emergency treatment center is still in the process of commissioning and will be officially operational after the year. In the future, “Internet of things elevators” is expected to cover the relevant venues of the Youth Olympic Games.

The elevator is equipped with a “black box” and can be monitored in real time. Ren Shi Po, an engineer from the Nanjing Institute of Special Equipment Safety Supervision and Inspection, said that monitoring elevators using the Internet of Things is, in simple terms, the installation of IoT sensors on the elevator’s original monitoring equipment. The sensor will monitor the video, audio, and operating status of the elevator in real time for 24 hours. The collected data will be transmitted to the emergency treatment center through the 3G telecommunications network. The central platform can perform on-line fault diagnosis and diagnosis and inform rescue personnel in a timely manner.

"The human body is a natural infrared radiation source. If it is trapped in the elevator for 3 minutes, the sensor in the elevator safety monitor can be automatically detected and a signal will be sent to the emergency treatment center to tell the staff that the elevator is trapped."

Ren Shibo said that the purpose of video surveillance is mainly to learn about the state of the car in the first instance in the event of an accident. Audio monitoring mainly acts as a pacifier. It can communicate with people trapped in the elevator in time to reduce the occurrence of secondary disasters. The monitoring of the running status is equivalent to installing a "black box" in the elevator, which can provide real-time parameters such as elevator door opening and closing, and top lift.

The background is still being debugged. After years of formal operation, Ren Shibo said that at present, 20 elevators, including the Olympic Sports Center, Xincheng Building, and Jinling Jiangbin Hotel, have been selected for trials. These elevators have installed sensors and the emergency handling center is also behind the scenes. In commissioning, it will officially run after the year.

It is understood that in the future, elevators with IoT sensors installed in the city will be able to be clearly monitored as long as the platform of the networked emergency treatment center can avoid the blind areas of the previous pure video monitoring, and can also investigate the behavior of the accidents reported in a timely manner.

According to statistics, there are 35,000 elevators in the city, of which 7000-8000 escalators and 1,000-2,000 debris elevators, and almost all vertical elevators.

After the successful pilot of 20 elevators, does it mean that all public elevators in Nanjing can be monitored using the Internet of Things?

In this regard, the quality supervision department said that the elevator monitoring network and sensor technology are currently doing the final commissioning work, and then the quality supervision department will formulate relevant standards to guide enterprises and universities to participate. Before the Nanjing Youth Olympic Games in 2014, all the fields related to the Youth Olympic Games used this technology.

The "Nanjing City Elevator Safety Regulations" that can intelligently determine the problems of elevators, punches, and ceilings and will be implemented on March 1 next year clearly stipulates that schools, hospitals, parks, airports, stations, rail transit stations, public parking lots, shopping malls, For passenger elevators newly installed in public places such as hotels, restaurants and entertainment venues, the use unit shall configure the elevator safe operation monitoring system and network it with the daily maintenance and maintenance units. Elevators that have been put into use prior to the issuance of these Regulations shall be retrofitted during major repairs or alterations.

When this ordinance came out, there was a public concern that privacy was leaked. In response, the relevant person from the Bureau of Quality Supervision and Administration of the City explained that in order to protect the privacy of residents, the regulations did not explicitly require video surveillance. Instead, the relevant sensors were installed through the Internet of Things technology. By then, the relevant units only needed to provide, for example, eight lifts to open the door and stop. Security parameters can be.

What is the difference between IoT monitoring and pure video surveillance? Ren Shibo said that the current property management can capture images of elevators, people, etc., through the video, but it is impossible to identify failures. The monitoring of the Internet of Things is different, mainly to monitor the signals of the elevator running status and provide sensor parameters. It's as if an 'expert system' has been added to the monitor to intelligently determine what kind of failure occurred and transfer it to the platform in time."

It is reported that when the sensor was set up, 12 monitoring points were selected, and 12 types of failures could be detected, including elevators and punching.
